The Citty Osacco / De Stadt Osacco

69.5 x 26 cms. Uncoloured. Two engraved sheets joined vertically in left of image. Narrow side margins as issued. Some very light spotting but overall a fine example.

The first Western view of Osaka. A beautifully designed somewhat fanciful panorama of the Kansei port viewed from the sea.  The foreground is filled with sampans, fishing boats and barges whilst the City is laid out in the middle distance, the major buildings and sites of importance picked out and referenced to a detailed numbered key in the top corners. From John Ogilby's 1670 Atlas Jappanensis, a pirated English translation of Arnold Montanus' influential early account of the 17th Century Dutch embassies to Japan, first published in Amsterdam in 1669.
