[1669]c1670

Miako

78 x 28.5 cms. Uncoloured. Narrow side margins as issued. Two joined sheets. Trace of old folds. Overall fine example.

The earliest European view of the City of Kyoto, first published in 1669 in Arnold Montanus' profusely illustrated account of the first Dutch encounters with Japan. The City is viewed in fanciful detail from across the Kamo River with a skyline of temples, palaces and fortifications clearly visible in the middle distance and referenced to a numbered key in both English and Dutch in the top corners of the engraving. This example from John Ogilby's English translation, entitled the Atlas Jappanensis & published in London 1670.
