From Volume 14 of the late 18th Century multi-volume French Histoire Universelle, an attractively engraved map of the Korean peninsula and Japan. Korea is modelled on the earlier outline of D'Anville and is consequently considerably fattened and foreshortened. The outline for Japan derives from the Kaempfer / Scheuchzer model of some 60 years earlier but with notable refinements is its overall shape and orientation. Hokkaido is shown as Jeso-gasima, an extensive northern landmass and tentative Asian peninsula. An interesting & relatively uncommon item.
