William Adams Reytogt naar Oost Indien....

23 x 15 cms. Recent hand colour. Top margin cut close to platemark as issued. Traces of old folds. Small chip at sheet edge in left side margin, well away from engraved surface, otherwise fine.

A charming early 18th century Dutch map of the islands of Japan recounting the arrival of the first recorded Englishman to reach Japan, the pilot of the Dutch ship Liefde, William Adams. The Liefde formed part of a five vessel Dutch expedition sent out from the Netherlands in 1598. The expedition entered the Pacific ocean by the Straits of Magellan and the Liefde was finally shipwrecked on the southern coasts of Japan in April 1600. Adams later became a trusted confidant of the Shogun and a key figure in early 17th century European relations with Japan. The decorative detail includes an attractive title cartouche showing Adams being presented at the Shogun's court. Cartographically, the map falls within the Dudley-Janssonius model as identified in Walter's Japan catalogue.
