Fine head and shoulder portrait of the Dutch master etcher, engraver, sculptor, artist and medallist, Romeyne de Hooghe [1745-1708]. In his life he produced over 3500 prints, many of a satirical nature, the best known being those directed against the French King Louis XIV. His prints also served as propaganda for the Dutch king, William of Orange, later William III of England, in whose service he was to be employed at one time. He was also a prolific book illustrator and many of the great Dutch illustrated books of the late 17th Century period are embellished with his engravings and prints. Perhaps the best known of his cartographic works are the series of nine superbly engraved and highly decorative sea charts of the English and French coastlines published as the Atlas Maritime in 1693 as part of Pierre Mortier's revised edition of Hubert Jaillot's earlier maritime atlas, the Neptune Francois.
