VINCENTIUS CORONELLI COSMOGR. REIP. VENET.
9 x 14 cms. Uncoloured. Trimmed to just within plate mark all round. Otherwise a fine clean example.
Attractive and uncommon portrait of the famous Venetian globe and map maker, Vincenzo Coronelli [1650-1718]. Ordained as a Franciscan priest Coronelli became one of the most famous mathematicians, globemakers and cartographers of his day. Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic, he also taught geography at Venice's University, and in 1680 founded the first Geographical society, the Academia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. In 1699 he also became Father General of the Franciscan Order. Amongst his most famous productions were the large pair of celestial and terrestrial globes, some 15 feet in diameter, made for King Louis XIV of France. His Atlases were models of fine engraving and decorative baroque design, and included the Atlante Veneto [1690-91], Isolario dell'Atlante Veneto [1696-97], Corso Geografico [1692], Epitome Cosmografica [1693] and finally the Libro dei Globi [1703. A portrait of Coronelli appears as a frontispiece to the Atlante Veneto and it must be from this likeness that the present portrait, engraved by I E Krauss, is taken. Coronelli is here shown in priestly attire and head cap, his left hand placed on a globe, his right holding a pair of dividers.
