Rare and unusual portrait depicting the young Danish journalist, Malthe Conrad Bruun, a native of the town of Thisted and ardent supporter of the ideals of the French Revolution. In the late 1790's Bruun became heavily embroiled with struggles over the freedom of the Danish Press. Following stringent new censorship laws introduced by the Danish sovereign, Crown Prince Frederick, in 1799, he was indicted for a number of political pamphlets which overtly criticized the government of the day. Bruun feared exile from Denmark and in anticipation of a severe sentence from the Danish Court, moved temporarily to the safety of Sweden and then the free port of Hamburg. In November 1799 he arrived in France and commenced a geographical treatise which became the Géographie mathématique, physique et politique de toutes les parties du monde (1803-1812, 6 Vols) completed with the assistance of Edmé Mentelle, a Professor at the Ecole Normale in Paris. From 1807, he initiated the Annales des Voyages, an annual journal reporting new discoveries and explorations, which encouraged their wider reporting and the accompanying academic and scientific researches that they produced. In 1807 he published a treatise on the Geography of Poland, which extended his reputation as one of France's leading cartographers and geographers. He died in 1826, in the process of finishing the draft of his final and perhaps most significant work, Précis de Geographie Universelle ou Description de toutes les parties du monde.
