Born in 1630 in Frankfurt am Main, the nephew of the artist and engraver Joachim von Sandrart [1606-1688], he leant his trade under the direction of his uncle in the Netherlands and later with William Hondius in Danzig. He subsequently moved to Regensburg before finally settling in Nuremberg in the mid 1650's. He produced several hundred portraits as well as several engraved views and maps, including a fine series of World and Continental maps based on late 17th Century contemporary Dutch models. Latterly he also known to have employed the young Johann Baptist Homann as an engraver in his Nuremberg workshops. Von Sandrart died in Nuremberg in August 1708. His wife Regina Christina, was a native of Regensburg, where she had been born in February 1636. She died within a few months of her husband in November 1708. Both outlived their two sons, Johann Jacob and Joachim, both of whom were also known as an engraver/artist & artist respectively. In this fine portrait by Augsburg engraver, Bernard Vogel after a painting by J Hirschmann, Von Sandrart wears the plain attire and white collar of a prominent Nuremberg citizen, whilst his wife wears a fine dress with delicate lacework front, bejewelled necklace and curiously decorated bonnet. The coats of arms of Von Sandrart and his wife appear mid-centre. An inscription below indicates that the couple were married for 54 years 7 weeks and 6 days and that they had 9 children : 4 sons and 5 daughters. The couple had celebrated their golden wedding on 19th June 1704 in the company of their whole extended family. This copperplate was commissioned by one of their daughters, Susanna Maria Wolfgang Moritz Endterin in memory of her parents. A most rare and unusual commemorative double portrait.
