Source : From an original painting by Dutch artist, Gerbrandt van den Eeckhout [1621-1674] dated 1669, preserved in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt. The engraving is the work of the German 19th Century German engraver, Johann Kaspar Eissenhardt [1824-1896]. The book open beside the sitter is a History of Amsterdam, and a large map of the City of Amsterdam hangs on the wall in the background on the engraving.
NB. Some clues within the painting & its likely date have now made the original attribution of the sitter of this painting as "Dapper" extremely unlikely. Just visible in the upper right of the image are the words "Aetatis 71, 1669" - which suggests a birth date for the sitter of 1598. Given the age of the subject, it is now generally agreed by scholars that the sitter is the Amsterdam book editor and historian, Isaac Commelijn [1598-1676]
