CHINA
45 x 34 cms. Coloured. Good impression & wide margins. Two very small areas of original paper thinning to mid left of sheet, one just outside the printed border of map, the other affecting front sail of land yacht, both now lightly reinforced with tissue on verso. Small area of filled paper loss to lower fold at sheet edge in blank margin only well away from printed surface and verso text, reinforced on verso.
Fine example of the important Mercator-Hondius map of China. This was one of the new maps first engraved by Jodocus Hondius for the updated and expanded edition of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas [Amsterdam, 1606]. A classic early 17th Century map of China with a long insular Korea and Japan delineated on the model of Portuguese cartographer Luis Teixeira [1595]. Includes illustrations of the famous wind-powered Chinese land yachts and a vignette of the crucifixion of one of the early Christian converts in Japan. Latin text issue of 1630. Overall a fine example.
